Liverpool claim Merseyside derby honours

Mo Salah's brace condemns Everton to the longest home drought against their fiercest rivals

Liverpool got back to winning ways in the Premier League as Mohamed Salah's brace earned a 2-0 triumph over 10-man Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield. After two successive top-flight draws, Jurgen Klopp's side returned to winning ways in convincing fashion against their city rivals, who are now without a victory in their last 12 Premier League home matches against Liverpool (D9 L3).

The Reds' match-winner was undoubtedly Salah, who expertly converted two penalty kicks to take his tally to 23 goals for the season and extend his remarkable scoring streak against Everton to nine goals in 12 appearances.

The match was already finely balanced when referee Anthony Taylor sent off Everton defender Mason Holgate in the 83rd minute for hauling down Divock Origi inside the penalty area, and that ultimately proved to be the decisive moment.

Liverpool had started brightly but struggled to really trouble a disciplined Everton backline, who held firm during a flurry of Reds pressure before the interval.

The second half was a slightly different story, though, with the visitors beginning to carve openings of their own as the hosts continued to dominate possession.

In the end, it was the timeless quality of Salah that proved the difference. The Egyptian winger coolly converted two spot-kicks to inflict another defeat on a beleaguered Everton side, who have now won just once in their last nine league matches and remain firmly rooted in the bottom half of the table.
