Hurricane Nicole: Florida's Gulf Coast Takes a Direct Hit

Category 1 Hurricane brings storm surge, high winds and heavy rainfall

More than 200,000 without power as storm moves inland

Hurricane Nicole made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near Vero Beach, Florida, bringing with it strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge. The storm has caused widespread power outages, with more than 200,000 customers without power as of 11 a.m. EST.

Nicole is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but the National Hurricane Center is warning of the potential for flooding and tornadoes. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the central and eastern parts of the state.

"This is a dangerous storm, and we urge everyone to take precautions," said Governor Ron DeSantis. "Stay off the roads if possible, and be sure to have a plan in place in case of a power outage."

Here are some tips for staying safe during Hurricane Nicole:

  • Stay off the roads if possible.
  • Secure loose objects around your home.
  • Have a plan in place in case of a power outage.
  • Listen to local news and weather reports.
  • Evacuate if you are in an area that is at risk of flooding.
